Six Famous People Who Need Very Little Sleep

How much more could you accomplish every day if you only needed a few hours of sleep each night? The average person spends one-third of his or her life sleeping. Some see those hours in bed as needed rest, while others view sleep as wasted time.

Many famous people claim to get by on very little sleep with no adverse affects, which may contribute to their success. Here are six celebrities who are known for spending the least amount of time in dreamland.

Kelly Ripa

The host of Live! is an early bird and a night owl at the same time. She typically goes to sleep around 1:00 a.m. and wakes up at 6:00 a.m., which amounts to just five hours of sleep each night. Her spartan sleeping habits certainly help with balancing her morning television show with her busy family life that includes husband, Mark Consuelos, and their three teenage children.

Tom Ford

As a fashion designer, film director and father of one, Tom Ford makes little time in his schedule for shut-eye. He usually gets in less than five hours, sleeping from midnight to 4:30 a.m.

Jay Leno

The former Tonight Show host claims to need only four or five hours of sleep per night. This habit certainly helped him hold down a late-night television show while also making rounds on the comedy tour circuit. However, since leaving the Tonight Show in 2014, Leno may have a little more time for catching z’s.

Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart built her media empire from scratch and then re-built it following her time in prison for insider trading. It’s no surprise that she spends little time on frivolous indulgences like sleep, averaging only four hours per night.

Condoleeza Rice

The former secretary of state stays in shape by rising at 4:30 a.m. every day to hit the gym, regardless of how late she stayed up the night before. Considering her illustrious career that spans academia, politics, sports and even appearances on television shows like 30 Rock, Rice’s sleep-deprived schedule has certainly served her well.

Barack Obama

Rice is not the only political figure who gets by on very little sleep. President Barack Obama gets six hours or less per night, sleeping from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on a typical night. However, it is not unusual for the president to be woken up by his staff in order to deal with urgent official business.

Does Sleeping Less Lead to Success?

You might want to mimic the habits of these sleepless celebs in hopes of becoming an over-achiever yourself. However, scientific evidence suggests that the ability to thrive on small amounts of sleep is in your genes. A healthy lifestyle may also contribute to the ability to get by on little sleep, and it’s no surprise that most of the celebrities listed here eat a healthy diet and make energizing exercise a part of their daily routine.
